Early on Wednesday Morning and prompted by the recent drugging and robbery of two Turkish nationals in their Hotel rooms in North Pattaya, Police Colonel Suwan, the Pattaya Police Chief sent his officers to Pattaya Beach to round-up as many suspected prostitutes as possible.

Known as the “Coconut Ghosts”, as they often hide in the shadows waiting to be picked-up by foreign customers, more than 50 woman and transsexuals were detained and taken to Pattaya Police Station to be profiled and then fined in accordance with local ordinance which permits them to be fined the sum of 100 Baht should they be suspected of loitering with intent to cause a nuisance.

Police made it very clear that they will find those responsible for the drugging and robbery case but on this occasion the two suspects were not thought to be contained within the group of detainees.

if nobody picks them up off the street just to save a few hundred baht they would disappear fast enough.i really do not have any sympathy for the guys who get robbed.

How does one become a “suspected prostitute”? Since when is it illegal for a Thai citizen to sit on the street (or next to the beach) at night, even for several hours? Unless the Police conducted a sting operation on each of these ladies, where they sent a falang accomplice to ask each girl if she would like to “go with him” and the exchange of money was discussed, they are not prostitutes. They are law-abiding citizens and the Police are breaking the law by arresting them. All of these Police belong behind bars.

Big business now has its eyes on what is beach front prime land – as is Walking St. Past 10 yrs many sex-dependant businesses learned that designer labels, shopping malls, 5-star hotels, food courts…..provide better returns than down-at-the-heel sex ventures. All the while Pattaya diehards claimed it cud never happen. Relative to 3 or 5 yrs back the change is dramatic. Relative to 10 yrs back the change is unimaginable. More is to come.Just a matter of time for the hookers on that stretch and their down-at-heel shoppers discover the same. Hurray for change.

Bypassing the “Coconut Ghosts” subject …… Sir, please explain, what ‘promenade for families’ were you looking at??? I can’t count the times I’ve walked the coastline and marveled at what it once was, and might I add, that’s a far cry from what is experienced today! The water should be classified as a ‘bio-hazard’, the beach is littered beyond description, used by the masses as a toilet day and night, the erosion of the sand beach is deplorable (and using sand bags will never be a solution), trees cut-back as a security measure…. give me a break. Customers from Dusit could not see the fireworks display last Nov. and Dec.so they were butchered Now, to actually walk on the cemented foot path, better be on your best game… to dodge the motor bikes who use it as a private drive day and night! Stepping over raised curbing (where trees once grew), pavers that have been pulled up, used as stools and tossed about, standing water (again, bio-hazard) over flowing trash bins, de-faced public art, exposed live electrical cables at knee hight, and the thought of pushing a baby or toddler’s stroller down the “promenade’, well, I’m a gasp. So, “an attractive promenade – for families and singles – littered”. Yes, stop there, please! I guess we all only what we choose too.

Ha try 30yrs back….those who cannot harken back that far simply do not know what true definition of fun is.

About 33 yrs. ago the coconut ghosts were not much the problem, the beach was pretty much pristine, besides the odd tour boat beached at low tide, there were no beach chairs to rent, & vendors were few. There were no services to the beach, you had to take everything needed with you, with a few cabanas sprinkled about for shade. Ladyboys were still the problem near Walking Street, which wasn’t near what it is today, but someone had a special way of dealing with them.

I can’t for the life of me find the newspaper front page headline about that time. Then they didn’t edit out horrific scenes. The headline read “12 Ladyboys commit suicide on Jomtien Beach” lined up like sardines, with a gun shot through the head, it went on to say “no weapon found”.

In my 20 yrs of mongering I never once took a girl off the beach, figured there had to be a reason they didn’t work in a bar. They couldn’t have been moonlighting from a day job. There were no super-stores, or other opportunities for employment. A Family-Mart in Soi Post Office was the big game in town.

Now a second & even a third generation of Thais have grown up feeling entitled to farang $$$ because it’s been here for them. Guess who I thank for the changes I see here.

Clean-up’s need to start somewhere. For me its getting hookers off prime land and making money from changes “which suit me”. Your welcome to your own priorities. Please leave me to my priorities. Meanwhile, a few people sitting around me are curious wot yr doing in Pattaya??. With a list of negatives so long many wud have moved elsewhere. Yes, stop there please !

How does one become a “suspected prostitute”?
when one gets married .. the money soon goes !!

  • Simon

I find it insulting to be desribed as a down at heel shopper.
Beach road has been real value for me over the years not having to pay bar fines has been awesome and the selection of girls has always been a bonus.
The lady boys Marc are the problem!
They need to be removed by law enforcement from beach road and permently most of the crime and ongoing problems stem from them, then we may see a attractive promenade for Family and singles as you say become reality!

  • Mike

weasel looks like you support them guess you,ll one of there regular customers another cheap charlie expat living on a budget in Thailand.

  • A Town Planner Consultant LOS

Obviously may of you don’t know about the town plan scheme in place. WS and coconut bar will be gone by 2018 and will be replaced with grand hotels and arcades.. Private beaches etc,,, and the rest will have to join sister towns like Jomtien when this happens…. Still with the issue of malls and arcades is that freelancers can still ply the trade but at least the pathways will be nice and the rubbish will be gone. The scene that most of us enjoy Pattaya for will move out to LK, Bukko, Dianna and the new baht bus route general circle will be 2nd and bukko…Enjoy whilst you can my fellow BM…

Marc; stay off the beach if it bothers you so. You ass-ume they’re hookers because they are walking/standing near the road? What about the hundreds of men eating/ partying on the beach benches? Are they offered for rent?
