Russian Tourist sliced-open and killed following speed boat accident near Larn Island

11th January 2010

On Monday Afternoon, in the waters off Lan Island close to Dar Yai Beach which is located 4kms off the coast of Pattaya, a boating accident occurred, which resulted in the death of a Russian Tourist who sustained a major laceration to his abdomen. The incident occurred while the man was swimming; however he was approximately 100 meters outside of the designated swimming zone, according to initial reports and was actually swimming in a boating channel. A speedboat named “Kantalak 409”, driven by Khun Narongrit approached the area and the blades of his outboard motors came into contact with the victim, named as Mr. Oleg Poliakov aged 40. Khun Narongrit gave himself up to authorities who believe him to have complied with boating regulations even though he failed to spot the Russian Tourist in the water. Three other Russian Tourists who accompanied the victim to the Island were escorted back to Pattaya where Russian Embassy officials met them. They are currently assisting Police with the investigation. Initial reports of this being a diving accident have been discounted as have initial reports of a second Russian man feared missing which has also been found not to be correct.

  1. If you see how many people are when on holiday, it’s not surprising that things like this and road deaths happen, as many seem to leave their common sense at home. As terrible as these things are, don’t be surprised as many more will inevitably follow unless every tourist starts to be more vigilant.

2 gwats – I guess, nationality in this case is irrelevant!
Can tell a lot of stories happened to people from many countries.
    Get rid of the moralistic

  4. gwats says:

Thailand is a Constitutional Monarchy, same as England. There will be growing pains and mistakes, and getting the Boating laws and regulations followed on a consistent basis will be one of those.
Perhaps future/ present Russian tourists will learn from this tragedy and start using a little common sense in Pattaya. This guy is dead because he was foolish and arrogant. Could have happened anywhere, but unfortunately, it happened in Pattaya so it get’s press attention.

  5. Pattaya boy says:

It’s about time they got to grips with the speedboats and jet scooters. The Thai’s and tourists who use them dont seem to care at all about swimmers and divers .

  6. Jan Dalvang says:

I have been sitting at the beach of Pattaya for several years looking at what’s going on at the water front, In my opinion there should be a speed limit for ALL vehicles within a certain distance off the beach There are swim areas that no one (jet skies) respect I am wondering when will a mayor accident occure. do we have to wait for that untill something’done
