Red Shirt protests lead to relocation of animals

13th March 2010

With the so-called Red Shirt protests in Bangkok having the potential to become quite serious, the management of the Dusit Zoo in the capital have decided to relocate some 14 animals considered to be at risk to other zoos. One of these is the popular Khao Kheow Open Zoo located in Sri Racha district. Only three types of animal are to be relocated: Asian elephants, African flamingoes and Australian red kangaroos. These last are not being moved because of their colour, but simply due to the fact their enclosure is situated right next to a main road where Red Shirt protests are expected to take place. The Khao Kheow Open Zoo already boasts a large number of attractions from the animal kingdom, including orangutans, barking deer, hippos, and giraffes, many of which are in enclosures that allow visitors to get up quite close.
