At a press conference called on Thursday and held in the office of the contractor, it was announced the new by-pass road under construction in central Pattaya should be open to vehicular traffic by the end of March. The by-pass is situated between Central and North Pattaya Roads on Sukhumvit Road, heading north towards Bangkok. Against a back drop which included a large map of the area, with the new road highlighted in faded pink, as well as an equally colourful work schedule and bar chart, the contractor looked as pleased as a cat with a bowl of cream as he made his announcement. The new road will reduce the distance to Bangkok by eight kilometers and when completed is estimated to have cost a trifling two billion baht. At this stage there are no plans to install the traditional tollway on the new road, but this prospect has not been ruled out in the future.
