On Monday morning we travelled to Utapao Airport, located 45 minutes from Pattaya for their 21st Anniversary celebration which also marks a change in name for the airport to the Pattaya-Utapao International Airport. The event was hosted by Rear Admiral Sorashar, the Director of the Airport which is situated within the Sattahip Military Airbase. Although commercial flights are limited at this time, plans to expand commercial flights for the Domestic and International market are ongoing with plans to improve the terminal building and other facilities for travelers. By 2012 upgrades to the airport should be complete at a cost of 976 Million Baht which will allow the airport to compete with the Suvanabumi Airport in Bangkok and offer an alternative for travelers to the Eastern Seeboard.

This being 2010, I very much doubt the 2012 completion date. Nothing in Thailand is ever started or finished on time or budget!!
